A Coralville man has been taken into custody after allegedly assaulting his live-in girlfriend.

Police report that 25-year-old John Hoins of 22nd Avenue got into a physical altercation with the woman, who is the mother of their minor child, Wednesday night around 8:15. Hoins reportedly struck the victim in the head multiple times, kicked and stomped her in the head, and slammed her head in a door. He also is alleged to have put her into a “naked choke hold,” preventing her from breathing and causing pain. The couple’s child was present during the incident.

Hoins was taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with Domestic Abuse with intent to inflict injury, and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding airflow. If convicted on both charges, Hoins could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.

A no-contact order was requested between the two.
