Iowa City Police arrested an armed subject late Christmas Eve night at a westside laundromat.

Officers responded to a trespassing call at Laundromania on Mormon Trek Boulevard at 11:45 Tuesday night. While officers were speaking with the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Zackarie Porter of Glen Oaks Drive in Coralville, he kept touching a bulge in the front of his jeans. After Porter was told to sit down, he used his right hand to pin an object against his leg. Officers considered this a sign that Porter had a hidden handgun, and put him into handcuffs. That’s when he allegedly admitted to having a handgun.

A search of Porter’s person turned up a small silver handgun with the markings indicating serial number, caliber, make and model completely obliterated.

Online records show Porter had a 1st Degree Robbery charge adjudicated as a juvenile last year. He’s now charged with Carrying Weapons and Dominion or Control of a Firearm By A Felon. If convicted of both charges, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
