An Iowa City man was arrested Saturday night after seven bottles of vodka were allegedly located in his vehicle after an accident, and his initial PBT was nearly four and a half times over the legal limit to drive.

Police were called to the Walmart on Highway 1 West at 6pm on reports of a motor vehicle accident involving 26-year-old Colin James Chaloupka of the Bon-Aire Mobile Home Lodge in Iowa City. He allegedly told officers that he had had 4-5 shots to drink, or about a half a bottle of vodka.

Chaloupka reportedly had slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and impaired balance. He allegedly attempted 4 steps on the walk and turn test but then stated he couldn’t do it.

An initial PBT showed a blood-alcohol content of .359; a Datamaster reading dropped it to .313, still nearly four times over the legal limit.

A search of Chaloupka’s vehicle turned up seven bottles of vodka, an unopened can of Busch Light, and a bottle of Tito’s vodka.

Chaloupka was arrested and charged with his first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to one year if convicted.
