Iowa’s Ride, an alternative to the decades-old RAGBRAI cycling event, has made the decision to cancel its alternative event, but is keeping 25% of the registration fees.
In a release on the group’s website, they report that it’s not feaseable to host the inaugural event this year. Citing the governor’s edict to close all Iowa’s schools, which they planned to use as overnight campgrounds on several stops, and recommendations from law enforcement agencies, city leaders and other safety agencies, they knew the ride couldn’t continue as planned.
Requests for refunds have been extended until May 15th, but because of what the group cites is their original registration policy, and citing un-recoupable costs in the initial planning of the event, registered participants will receive just 75% of their registration fees.
In their statement dated Monday, the group director, TJ Juskeiwicz, says they “do not want to give false hope or promises that we would just be able to roll your registration over to a future ride, like many long-time established events, when there is so much uncertainty in the world. We are trying to do the right thing during unimaginable times. ”
Refunds may take up to 30 days to process.
