Coralville Police say an impaired driver hit multiple vehicles before his arrest.

53-year-old Peter Cotant of 10th Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 12:45 Saturday afternoon. According to arrest records, Cotant was called in by multiple witnesses as a reckless driver on 12th Avenue near Maplewood Drive at 4:15pm on January 20th. He was allegedly all over the roadway, including hitting two oncoming northbound vehicles on 12th Avenue.

Coralville Police eventually caught up to Cotant, who showed signs of impairment including slurred speech, droopy eyelids and impaired balance and judgement. He was not diabetic, and reported no injuries or ailments.

Cotant was taken to Mercy Iowa City for his declining condition, where he was given NARCAN and came to. Police say a breath test was not consistent with his level of impairment.

Due to his declining health, Cotant agreed to turn himself in once he was released from Mercy.

As police were moving Cotant’s car from the roadway, they discovered open containers, a small glass pipe with burnt residue, multiple baggies of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, and THC oil in a small glass vial.

Cotant is charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of two years in prison.
