The Downtown Iowa City Block Party is another casualty of the coronavirus pandemic.
After Summer of the Arts announced the cancellation of the Arts Fest scheduled for June 5-7, the Iowa City Downtown District has also cancelled and made changes to their summer schedule, most notably the 4th edition of the Block Party.
Last year’s event drew over 40,000 people to the downtown, and in a release from the Downtown District, they concluded that a gathering of that size just wasn’t a safe option. They plan to break it up into several smaller activities and events throughout the summer, but did not offer specifics.
The District was also planing a Ped Mall completion party this summer to celebrate the end of years of work on the downtown area, but that will be delayed.
Summer of the Arts also announced that the two Friday Night Concerts scheduled for May 22nd and 29th have been cancelled. Concerts scheduled for June will either be repurposed as virtual events or scheduled later in the summer. The group also is working on options for the Saturday night Movie Series.
