Iowa City Police say a local auto technician installed tint in a customer’s car, took it for a test drive, crashed, and got arrested.
According to arrest records, officers were dispatched to a 1996 Ford Mustang in a ditch along Highway 6 west of Scott Boulevard just after 9:15am on May 17th. The car was found abandoned in the ditch, lodged against a pole and some bushes. Damage was estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.
While officers were investigating, 31-year-old Ross Cornwall of Maggard Street arrived on the scene and admitted that he had taken the car for a test drive after installing window tint. Cornwall’s Linkedin shows him to be an automotive paint technician at Harv’s Auto Body on Highland Avenue.
Cornwall told police the brakes on the car failed, and he went through a stop sign and hit the pole at full speed. A check of his license showed it as revoked until July 20th.
Cornwall was charged with Driving While Revoked. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
Cornwall was arrested the previous month at Harv’s Auto for Assault Causing Bodily Injury. A conviction on that charge would also lead to one year in jail.
