Cedar Rapids police have released the name of the victim of Thursday’s early morning fatal shooting.

According to a CRPD news release, just after 5am Thursday, the City’s Joint Communications Agency received a report of a fight and shots fired inside a residence in the 1000 block of Regent Street NE.  Dispatchers were also advised that there was a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound.

Officers arrived on the scene to find a 20-year old male, now identified as Malik James Sheets, inside the residence who had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the upper body.  Sheets was transported to UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police say there appears to have been a large party inside the residence, an argument ensued, and shots were fired.  The shooting appears to be a targeted incident.

There is an active, ongoing homicide investigation.
