Union recertification of thousands of workers at the University of Iowa Healthcare system was announced Tuesday.

Three unions representing the workers voted to recertify by over 99 percent.

A new state law requires unions to recertify every two years, and the votes must reach a majority of union members, not just those of participating voters to be recertified. A non-vote by a union member counts as a no.

KCRG Reports the three unions include SEIU Local 199, who represents around 4,000 RNs and other healthcare professionals in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. AFSCME Local 12 covers around 4,600 of the staff, nursing assistants, and service or maintenance workers at UIHC. The third union, EU Local 896-COGGS, represents around 1,800 graduate employees of the university.
