Iowa City Police say a drunk driver was found with a loaded firearm Saturday night.

Officers first noticed 29-year-old Joshua Ramsey of Des Moines when he made an illegal turn southbound onto Gilbert Street from Iowa Avenue just before 9pm. Police say they noticed Ramsey speeding 37 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone, as well as drifting into the northbound lanes of Gilbert Street near Bowery Street. Ramsey’s 2014 Ford Fusion was pulled over near Gilbert and Benton Streets. He allegedly denied drinking alcohol despite exhibiting multiple signs of intoxication. Police say he showed impairment on field sobriety tests.

Officers located a Glock 17 in the driver’s side door pocket, next to Ramsey’s leg. It had seven rounds in its chamber.

Ramsey reportedly later admitted to drinking a shot of whiskey. His blood alcohol content was measured at .087% on a portable Breathalyzer test and .095% on a Datamatser.

Ramsey is charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Carrying Weapons. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of three years in jail.
