ICCSD joins CCA in asking for waiver on in person learning

The Iowa City Community School District has announced that they’ve applied for a waiver from the state that would allow in-person learning to be suspended for two weeks.

The district applied for the waiver Saturday.

A check of the district’s COVID dashboard shows 121 students currently confirmed or presumed COVID-19 positive. 462 students are currently quarantining due to exposure to the coronavirus, Among staff, 25 are currently COVID-19 positive, 83 currently quarantining due to exposure. There are currently 16 classroom closures.

Monday was the 6th day in a row with positivity rate averages above 10 percent.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports about 54% of students in the district are currently taking classes in-person, in a hybrid model.

The district has yet to get a decision from the Department of Education.

The announcement comes on the heels of the news that Clear Creek Amana petitioned for a waiver due to staff shortages among bus drivers and faculty. They applied Sunday and went to virtual-only learning Monday and today.

The Linn-Mar school district has also asked the state for a waiver due to staff shortages. They hope to be in virtual-only learning by Wednesday. Benton Community Schools will temporarily move to online-only instruction starting Wednesday. College Community Schools has requested a waiver and are waiting for a decision from the Department of Education.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District has announced they will begin temporary learning on Thursday due to increased cases of COVID-19 in the community. The district has applied for a 14 day waiver through the DOE.
