Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague Thursday extended the city’s mask order to January 15th of next year.

The order was originally put into place on July 21st due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The extended order states that a face covering that covers the nose and mouth must be worn in all public places.

No business may provide service to a customer, or allow a customer to enter without a mask. Signs should remain posted at entrances about the mask proclamation.

Violators of the order face charges punishable as a simple misdemeanor. The fine for the first offense is a $105, with second or subsequent offenses being the maximum fine for a simple misdemeanor, $855.

Police are advised that a citation should be given as a last resort to obtain compliance.
