A Cedar Rapids man faces theft charges after allegedly taking a plate off a DNR vehicle.

Authorities stopped 26-year-old Orlin Aguilar Castro of Wilson Avenue Monday at approximately 11:30 am in Lake McBride Park for operating a vehicle without a license plate. Upon contact, a strong odor of raw marijuana was reportedly coming from the vehicle.

A subsequent search allegedly turned up a State of Iowa official license plate belonging to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division. Aguilar Castro reportedly admitted to taking the plate off a DNR vehicle and planning to use it on his 2004 Honda Odyssey. The DNR confirmed that the plate had been stolen.

Aguilar Castro was taken into custody and charged with 5th degree theft and marijuana possession. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to 13 months in jail.
