University of Iowa Student Government has taken the first step towards making it easier for students and staff to vote.

The UISG passed a resolution Tuesday night calling for school officials and the Iowa Board of Regents to make Election Day a University holiday. Supporters say it would make it easier for students and staff to vote on that day. The proposal would include both general election years and midterms.

Emma Speer, chair of the UISG Governmental Relations Committee, told The Daily Iowan that the proposal would be especially helpful to non-traditional students who attend classes all day and work at night.

The move must first be approved by UI administrators and the Regents. UISG leaders say they have not yet reached out to either group.
