The city of Iowa City is officially soliciting applications to fill a vacancy on the city council.

On November 9th, councilor Janice Weiner submitted her resignation following her successful election to the Iowa Senate. Weiner’s resignation is effective as of January 1st.

According to a news release issued by the city on Monday, the council intends to fill the vacancy by appointment at a special public meeting at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10th at City Hall on East Washington Street.

Any qualified person interested in being appointed to the council is encouraged to submit their application online or via paper application found in the City Clerk’s Office at the following address:

Ms. Kellie K. Fruehling, City Clerk
City of Iowa City, Iowa
410 East Washington Street
Iowa City, Iowa 52240
email: [email protected]

The deadline for applications is Tuesday, January 3rd.

Finalists in attendance may make oral presentations at the January 10th special formal meeting where the council will appoint an applicant to fill the vacancy.

Weiner has one year left on her city council term. At last week’s meeting, the council voted unanimously to appoint a replacement, with councilor John Thomas absent. The alternative option was setting a special election, which the council unanimously rejected. Cited factors included the short time remaining on Weiner’s term and the cost of holding a special election. A special election could still be forced by public petition.
