The Iowa City Community School District wants to expand its preschool offerings by adding two new programs with before and after school care.

The Gazette reports Superintendent Matt Degner said the location of the new programs hasn’t been decided, but he and board member Lisa Williams met with other city and school officials in a joint entities meeting earlier this month to explore ways 4-year-old preschool offered by the district can be enhanced.

The district also wants area cities and school districts in Johnson County to request a local-option sales tax, with ten percent of the revenue earmarked for Iowa City schools.

Discussion on the expansion has involved a number of area cities, the Clear Creek Amana Community School District Board of Directors, the University of Iowa, and the Johnson County Supervisors.

The current preschool pilot programs with before-and after-care began this school year at Wickham and Shimek elementaries and operate between 7 am and 5:30 pm.

The district currently offers over 40 preschool programs in its schools.
