Coralville Police say a drunk driving suspect went back to the bar where he’d been drinking to drink more beer after crashing his car.

Officers were called to the Iowa River Landing just after 7pm Friday for a two-vehicle accident on Quarry Road. One driver reported that the man who hit him smelled of ingested alcohol. The suspect…later identified as 43-year-old Theodore Currie of Rockledge, Florida…then allegedly said he was going to go back into Vesta to have another drink.

Arriving officers say they found Currie inside the bar with a nearly empty beer in his hand. He had a large cut on his head, but refused repeated offers for medical attention. When asked how he got the cut, Currie reportedly pointed in the direction of the accident. Police say when they asked him to get his information from his car he refused, saying he wasn’t going to move so he wouldn’t be arrested.

Currie allegedly told police he had consumed three beers between the time of the accident and the time they arrived. Vesta staff told investigators that Currie had numerous drinks before the accident as well.

Currie reportedly showed signs of intoxication and refused sobriety testing. He was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
