New details have been released about an upcoming Golden Gloves boxing tournament coming to downtown Iowa City.
ICOR Boxing on Highland Avenue issued a news release Thursday saying over 60 amateur boxers have registered for the competition so far. Ten of the registered boxers are from Johnson County. Representing ICOR Boxing are Ozzy Cortez and Dady Mansaray, from Iowa City, and Ben Moore, of Solon. Boxers from Big George’s Boxing Gym include Josh Gallman of North Liberty and Maddi Pecaitis of Coralville. Athletes competing for Hawkeye Boxing are Luciano Cardozo-Torres, Benjamin Stimson, Erik Caperon, and Jasmin Mendoza, from Iowa City, and Jonathan Gallman, of North Liberty.
This is the first year the Iowa tournament has been held outside of Des Moines, and for the first time this year there will be a junior division for 15- to 17-year-olds.
Semifinal matches will be contested on Saturday, April 1st at the Graduate Hotel on the Ped Mall. The event begins at 5PM with the first match scheduled for 6PM. Finals will be on Sunday, April 2nd at 12PM with the first bout scheduled for 1PM. The champions of each weight class will earn a spot on the Iowa Golden Gloves team that will compete at nationals in the Golden Gloves of America Tournament of Champions in Philadelphia in May.
Tickets for next weekend’s event are $25 for a single-day pass, or $40 for a 2-day pass. More information can be found at www.iowagoldengloves.org.
