A 4th of July grill fire spread to a Cedar Rapids residence, displacing the homeowners.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 700 block of 1st Avenue Southeast just before 3:30 pm on reports of a grill on fire next to the house.  Upon arrival, crews observed heavy fire coming from the back of the home. Apparently, one of the 20-pound propane tanks on the grill had ruptured, spreading the fire to the deck and house.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire, which had spread to the attic, but significant damage was sustained to the deck and back of the single-family residence.

There were no injuries reported, but the family, which included at least one adult and two children, were displaced. They received on-site assistance from the American Red Cross.

No damage estimate was provided about the fire, which was ruled as unintentional.
