Iowa City Police say a suspect accused of violating a no-contact order told them he would keep doing so in the future, and they would just have to keep arresting him.

Investigators say they discovered 29-year-old Jamal Cotton at an address on Scott Boulevard at 7:30 Wednesday night. Cotton was reportedly with a subject who has a no-contact order against him. Police say he had a bag of suspected marijuana on his person, which he allegedly admitted was his.
According to arrest records, Cotton said he didn’t care about the no-contact order, that he would continue to violate it, and that police would just have to keep arresting him.

Cotton was given a suspended sentence on Domestic Abuse Assault – 2nd Offense and Child Endangerment charges in June stemming from a pair of incidents at the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street. He also has two earlier no-contact order violation convictions on his record.

Cotton now faces a new no-contact order violation as well as a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on the drug charge, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
