An Iowa City man has been charged in connection with a police chase that reportedly reached speeds of up at 130 miles per hour.

24-year-old Juan Carlos Acosta Estrada of Eastbury Drive was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 4:30 Friday afternoon.  The Iowa State Patrol says it attempted a traffic stop on Acosta Estrada’s 2021 Mercedes A220 just before 1:45 a.m. on January 28th after it was allegedly moving across all three lanes of traffic on eastbound Interstate 80 near the 1st Avenue exit in Coralville. The vehicle reportedly failed to yield to officers who had their lights and sirens activated, reaching speeds up to 130 miles per hour. The State Patrol says the Mercedes was traveling 70 miles per hour when it blew through the red light on the on-ramp from eastbound I-80 to North Dodge Street, tried to turn, and crashed into a ditch. A footprint trail in the snow allegedly led investigators to Acosta Estrada, who was found lying under a tree along the nearby treeline.

Acosta Estrada reportedly showed signs of intoxication and was in possession of a bottle of Hennessey. So far, he’s only been charged with Felony Eluding. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
