The Corridor Community Action Network’s Clothes Cruise RV was destroyed in a fire early Monday morning. The vehicle was parked on the 800 block of South Capitol Street in Iowa City when the fire was reported just before 3:15 a.m.

According to a release from the nonprofit, the RV served as the corridor’s sole free community-wide clothing resource, providing essentials to those in need across the region. Since its first distribution in November of 2021, the RV has served hundreds of residents. The program’s primary mission was to make clothing accessible to those in need while reducing the amount of textiles going to landfills.

The RV also distributed COVID health supplies, toiletries, menstrual supplies, sexual health supplies, harm reduction supplies, energy saving kits from Green Iowa Americorps and resources from other local groups such as Table to Table and the Iowa City Human Rights Coalition.

Due to staffing issues, the Clothes Cruise had not been doing routes, but a new driver was about to start before the RV was destroyed.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, as investigators were unable to ascertain whether it was intentional or accidental. Regardless, the loss leaves CCAN facing the daunting task of rebuilding and restoring its essential services.
