Two Linn County residents are dead after a high-speed police chase ended with a head-on collision near Riverside.

The Muscatine Police Department says the chase started Sunday afternoon around 3:15 when dispatchers received multiple reports of a female driving through Muscatine shooting at people. Officers located the suspect vehicle along Park Avenue and attempted to stop the driver. The driver refused to yield, and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The pursuit led out of Muscatine along 231st Street.

A Muscatine Police officer involved in the pursuit lost control of his car and crashed near the Cedar River. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The pursuit of the suspect vehicle was picked up by other law enforcement agencies and continued west through Louisa and Washington Counties until it reached Highway 218. The Iowa State Patrol says the pursuit ended just after 3:45 p.m. when the suspect began driving northbound in the southbound lanes just north of the Riverside exit. The suspect’s 2021 Nissan Rogue eventually hit a 2017 Ford Explorer head-on. The driver of the Nissan and suspect in the shootings…36-year-old Brittany Miles of Cedar Rapids… died at scene. The driver of the Ford…27-year-old Olivia Alvarez of Cedar Rapids…died after life-saving efforts were attempted. Both accidents are being investigated by the Iowa State Patrol.

No individuals were hurt during the shooting incidents in Muscatine.
