The Iowa City school board has passed a ban on cellphones in district classrooms.

The vote was held at Tuesday night’s board meeting. The policy will require that cellphones, earbuds and headphones be detached from a student’s body during class. Phones will also be required to be silenced and stowed away in a backpack, purse or other item used for carrying personal effects or the student’s locker.

Students and parents will receive details about the policy later this month, with instruction leading to a January 21st implementation.

Governor Kim Reynolds has indicated support for a statewide ban on cellphones in Iowa classrooms, a subject which will likely be taken up by the legislature next month.
