An Indiana man has been found guilty of murder after he catfished his victim into meeting him in an Iowa City apartment complex parking lot, where he shot him dead.
33-year-old Renard Winfield Jr., of Gary, Indiana posed online as a woman to lure the victim, Tommy Curry, to the Meadowlark Apartment Complex on Lakeside Drive in April of 2021. Police say Winfield approached Curry’s vehicle and shot him multiple times.
Evidence included surveillance video which showed Winfield fleeing the apartment complex in a vehicle registered to his mother. Prosecutors say phone records and videos showed Winfield was brandishing a 9mm pistol in Iowa City around the time of the crime.
A jury deliberated for about four hours before deciding Winfield was guilty of 1st Degree Murder, which is punishable by life in prison without the possibility of parole.
