A 27-year-old Coralville man faces charges after a traffic stop allegedly discovered him in possession of a stolen weapon and a quantity of marijuana.

Devontay James of 9th Street was stopped on the 1400 block of Kodiak Court in Coralville just before 11pm Wednesday for an alleged equipment violation.  Police say a firearm reported stolen out of the Cedar Rapids Police Department was located on the back passenger floorboard.

In addition, a small orange container containing a green leafy substance was reportedly discovered in the driver door side compartment.  James also produced another small orange container out of his coat pocket, also containing a green leafy substance.  In total, the marijuana weighed approximately 2 grams.

James is allegedly the defendant two Orders of Protection in domestic abuse incidents, one being issued in 2020 and another in October of this year.

He was taken to the Johnson County Jail, and faces charges of Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, two counts of Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuser, and a Controlled Substance violation. If convicted on all charges, James could be sentenced to up to sixteen years in prison.
