Iowa City Police say a domestic assault suspect threatened to throw his victim into the Iowa River.

Officers stopped a Chevy Cruze being driven by 31-year-old Jesus De Jesus-Apolinar as he was driving on Highway 6 near Heinz Road at 2:15 Saturday morning. De Jesus-Apolinar was a suspect in an earlier domestic assault at his Benton Drive apartment. Police say he showed signs of intoxication, performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and had a breath alcohol level of .201%. Records show De Jesus-Apolinar has nine previous drunk driving convictions in four different states: Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

After his arrest, De Jesus-Apolinar allegedly promised police he would throw the woman he’s accused of assaulting into the river.

De Jesus-Apolinar is charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow, False Imprisonment, Operating While Intoxicated – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, and 1st Degree Harassment. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 14 years in prison.
