Iowa City Police say a convicted sex offender tried to solicit a minor for sex.
22-year-old Travis Schuchert of Schuchert Drive SE was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 2:15 Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say last Saturday Schuchert began communicating with a female he believed to be under the age of 16. He allegedly told her he wanted to commit sex acts with her, and made arrangements for her to skip school and join him at a pre-determined location on South Riverside Drive. He also reportedly sent the girl two photos of his genitalia.
Schuchert is on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry after being convicted of 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse in Keokuk County last year. The victim was a girl between the ages of 14 and 17. A police search of Schuchert’s phone after his Wednesday arrest allegedly turned up two Snapchat accounts that he had not reported to law enforcement, as required.
Schuchert is charged with Enticing a Minor for Sexual Purposes, Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Telephone Dissemination of Obscene Material to a Minor, and two violations of the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 52 years in prison.
