Getting paid not to work is a dream scenario. In the case of a Waterloo man, it’s also a potential felony.

According to authorities, an individual that works for a company that owns and operates the Sleep Inn & Suites on Madison Avenue in North Liberty reported that 44-year-old Julian Roby’s name was being used as an employee who worked at the hotel. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that Roby didn’t work there, but was getting steady paychecks.

The direct deposits were reportedly being direct-deposited into a bank account in Roby’s name. Between April and November 2023, he collected paychecks totaling nearly $16,000.

A warrant was issued on June 28th of last year.  Roby was served on Thursday. During his initial court appearance, bond was set at $10,000. He posted bond and was released ahead of his arraignment.

If convicted on the charge of 1st degree Theft, Roby could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
