A Coralville woman has been taken into custody after an investigation allegedly determined she cashed a number of bogus checks.

The incident occurred last December at the Acapulco Mexican Bakery on Keokuk Street in Iowa City. 52-year-old Melissa Zanders of Western Hills Mobile Estates reportedly cashed eight checks for a total of nearly $5400 between the 5th and 10th.  The checkbook on which the checks were written was reported missing. Zanders and another suspect were not affiliated with the victim and not given permission to use the checkbook.

During the incidents, security footage showed Zanders driving to and from the business, despite having a driving status of suspended.

A warrant was issued for Zanders’ arrest; she was taken into custody Friday and charged with 2nd degree Theft and Forgery. She faces a prison term of up to ten years if convicted on both counts.
