Today begins Iowa City Food Waste Prevention Week, celebrated to recognize the importance of reducing food waste to strengthen the community and to reduce climate impacts.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ 2022 Iowa Material Characterization Study, approximately 20% of materials disposed of in the Iowa City Landfill are food waste items. Food waste reduction ensures the water, energy, and land resources required to produce food are not wasted. Additionally, efforts to save quality food from being wasted support local systems to feed community members in need.
To commemorate the week, Mayor Bruce Teague proclaimed April 7 to 13 as Food Waste Prevention Week in Iowa City at the April 1 City Council meeting.
For community members interested in reducing food waste, the Love Food, Fight Waste program offers approachable ways to reduce food waste in daily life. The Love Food, Fight Waste program is a collaboration between Table to Table and the City of Iowa City.
