Working at the University of Iowa has its benefits and downfalls, according to new survey results from a 2024 “personal health assessment.”

The Gazette reports of the more than 10,000 U of I faculty and staff who completed the survey, just over half said they’re “thriving” — while the other nearly half said they’re “struggling.”

That gap has narrowed compared to the 2019 survey, which showed about two-thirds considered themselves as thriving, while just a third were struggling.

Over 46 percent of the eligible faculty and staff responded to the survey.

Over half of the respondents said they have too much to do, the overwhelming factor hindering their productivity. That was followed by financial stress, and having to take care of someone else. The survey showed every productivity hindrance in the new report had an increase over levels reported in the 2019 survey.

Individual health metrics, including poor nutrition, poor sleeping habits, lack of physical exercise and unmanaged stress, all had significant increases over the last five years.
