One person was killed and another injured in a three-vehicle crash in Cedar County.

The Iowa State Patrol says the incident took place just after 6:45 Friday morning on the 1700 block of Garfield Avenue, northeast of West Branch. The official accident report indicates a 2012 Mazda sedan being driven by 36-year-old Zachary Hutchinson of Clarence tried to pass two other vehicles while heading southbound. At the same time, one of the other two vehicles…a 2014 Hyundai SUV being driven by 37-year-old Michelle Foulks of Tipton…also attempted to pass the third vehicle, 2016 Chevy Pickup being driven by 63-year-old Debra Cooper of West Branch.

Hutchinson took evasive action and struck Cooper’s truck before going into the east ditch. Hutchinson died at the scene. His passenger, 28-year-old Makayla Casper of Clarence, was transported to University of Iowa Health Care. Hutchinson was not wearing a seat belt, while Casper had hers fastened.
