A Coralville man with a history of burglary and unauthorized credit card use has been charged with two counts of credit card fraud.
According to the police reports, 20-year-old Mekhi Wright of 9th Street used a stolen credit card to make purchases March 29th at Casey’s on the Coralville Strip and HyVee in Lantern Park Plaza. On both occasions, the purchases were less than $1500.
Wright was arrested last week and taken to the Johnson County Jail, where he faces two counts of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card and a probation violation.
On May 1 2023, Wright and another suspect mugged an 87-year-old woman at Fareway on Westwinds Drive. Police say he approached the woman as she was taking groceries to her car. When she got into the driver’s seat, Wright allegedly took her purse and the two fled to Wright’s apartment. They reportedly used one of the stolen credit cards to make a half-dozen fraudlent online orders. The listed shipping address for all six orders was Wright’s apartment. He also allegedly used his phone number and his girlfriend’s email address.
Wright was charged with 2nd degree burglary and could have faced up to ten years in prison. In September of last year, he was instead given a five year suspended sentence and five years of probation.
For the current alleged crimes, Wright faces a prison term of up to four years.
