A Coralville woman wanted on forgery and theft charges stemming from a check-cashing scheme in 2023 has been arrested.

Police say 31-year-old Shauntaya Murphy of 4th Avenue recruited an individual to cash fictitious checks for her. On April 20th 2023, the individual went to Hills Bank on South Gilbert Street and cashed a check from the account of Irving Point Apartments in the amount of $2211.

The individual was interviewed by police and said she kept between $100-$200 in exchange for cashing the check on behalf of Murphy.   She also reportedly identified Murphy by physical description, first name, and phone number.

Police say this was one of multiple checks the woman was recruited to cash for Murphy.

A warrant was issued for Murphy’s arrest on February 5th; she was taken into custody last week. Court records indicate she waived her rights and entered a plea of guilty on Friday.

Murphy was charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Non-Forcible Felony, 2nd degree Theft, and Forgery. She faces up to fifteen years in prison; a sentencing date has not been set.
