Federal officials have now revoked the visas of five University of Iowa students. That’s according to a news release from the Campaign to Organize Graduate Students, or COGS, which cites a webinar hosted by Russell Ganim, Dean of International Programs.
University officials say they were not aware of any violations that would lead to the revocations. The news comes less than a week after Ganim emailed international students to inform them that the visa of a UI student was canceled. According to the email, the university learned of that incident on April 4th.
COGS notes the revocation of the other students’ visas does not necessarily mean the affected students’ ability to remain legally in the country is revoked or that their student status is altered. Should a student’s visa or status become affected, there is still the possibility of reinstatement.
The revocations come after the Trump administration initiated a crackdown on international students nationwide for what they deem questionable activities.
