Bidding on a $459,000 replacement project for the Iowa River Trail Bridge was approved by the Iowa City City Council Tuesday.

The Daily Iowan reports a report on the bridge’s condition determined that the structure, located east of the Riverside Drive and Myrtle Avenue intersection, had reached the end of its service life and needed to be replaced before it further deteriorated.

The area is on University of Iowa property.

The bridge will be replaced with an engineered retaining wall, making it less expensive to maintain while allowing cyclists and pedestrians to feel safer using it.

The project is expected to break ground in May and be at or near completion by the beginning of the fall semester.
