The Iowa City City Council deferred rezoning along Governor Street for a property that could be developed into two 42-unit apartment buildings.

The Press-Citizen reports Council members peppered Senior Planner Anne Russett and City Attorney Eric Goers with questions and listened to a handful of public complaints as part of an hour-long discussion of the rezoning during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

The developer, TSB Holdings, LLC, and the City of Iowa City have fought over changes to the land for at least the last 15 years. The council also denied a rezoning on the land in 2011 by a unanimous vote.

The council deferred voting on the rezoning after over two dozen residents within 200 feet of the proposed development submitted protest petitions. Iowa law requires at least six of the seven councilors to approve the rezoning before it can go forward. Mayor Pro Tempore Mazahir Salih and Councilor Josh Moe voted to postpone the reading of the rezoning until after a scheduled consultation with the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission on May 6th.
