A reportedly uncooperative Iowa City man is facing several charges after incidents at a downtown bar, the Johnson County Jail, and at a hospital.
Officers were called to TCB bar on College Street at around 12:30 am Saturday on reports of a customer threatening staff and refusing to leave. They came upon 36-year-old Jamal Holmes of Keokuk Street standing in front of another bar. He reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred and confused speech, impaired balance, and the odor of ingested alcohol. Holmes also allegedly had a half-consumed vodka shooter in his pocket.
When Holmes was taken to the Johnson County Jail, he allegedly began spitting on the squad car partition. He then started banging his head on the partition, causing a laceration to his forehead. Holmes was taken to a hospital for treatment, but reportedly refused to get out of the squad car.
Holmes was put in a spit hood and brought inside the hospital, where he allegedly attempted to spit on two officers. He also reportedly refused commands to lay on the hospital bed and attempted to pull away from officers.
Once treated, Holmes refused to re-enter the squad car despite commands to do so.
He was charged with Public Intoxication, Interference with Official Acts, and two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations. Holmes could be sentenced to up to 26 months in jail if convicted on all charges.
