An area transient was arrested Saturday morning after he was found sleeping in a stolen vehicle.

Officers came upon 32-year-old Shadoe Van Damme on the 1100 block of Hampton Court at 8am behind the wheel of a 2017 Honda CRV. A check of the vehicle’s identification number found it to have been reported stolen to Iowa City Police.

Van Damme was the only occupant of the vehicle, and he was asleep in the driver’s seat.  When interviewed, he reportedly told officers that he had driven the Honda the day before.

A post-arrest search of Van Damme’s person allegedly turned up a glass pipe containing marijuana in his pants pocket.

He faces one count each of 1st degree Theft, Marijuana possession, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all charges, Van Damme could be sentenced to over 11 years in prison.
