Nationwide 50501 protests were held Saturday, including events in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

“50501” stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one movement.

Sources estimate about 2000 people took to downtown Iowa City to rally in defiance of what organizers nationwide describe as a relentless assault on democratic institutions and civil liberties.  Demonstrators lined 8th Avenue in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, holding signs and voicing opposition to the second Trump administration.

Earlier in the week, members of the University of Iowa community gathered on the Pentacrest to participate in the “Teach-in and Speak-Out” protest.  The Daily Iowan reported the protest was described by flyers hanging up across campus as being in support of academic freedom and science in higher education, and also spoke out against the violation of international students’ civil rights by revoking student visas as a consequence of attending protests.
