With Easter Sunday being celebrated on the same day as the unofficial high holiday 4/20, Iowa State Patrol troopers are putting in overtime to keep roads safe from impaired drivers.
Trooper Bob Conrad told CBS 2 that with increased traffic, they’ll be looking for drivers who’ve used alcohol or illegal drugs before getting behind the wheel. He also said that although recreational marijuana is now legal in 24 states, it’s still illegal in Iowa and it’s illegal to possess it while driving.
Driving under the influence of marijuana is against the law nationwide, but new data from AAA says 85% of cannabis users drive on the day they consume the drug. Over half say they do so within an hour of using.
Officials are encouraging anyone celebrating Easter or 4/20 to plan ahead and have a safe ride home if needed.
