A transient is accused of assaulting his former roommate with a golf club after breaking into their Iowa City apartment.
42-year-old Stephen Carter was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 4:15 Saturday afternoon. Iowa City Police say Carter broke down the door of the alleged victim’s apartment at Town & Campus on Arthur Street just before 3:15 on the afternoon of April 19th. Carter then reportedly hit the resident with a golf club, leaving a mark on their left triceps. The resident has lived with Carter within the last year, and a no-contact order is currently in place. Carter had reportedly been at the apartment the night before.
Carter is now charged with 1st Degree Burglary, Assault Against a Protected Party, Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, and a pair of no-contact order violations. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 35 years in prison.
