The Johnson County Board of Supervisors has approved a $1.7 million expansion of its Fleet Shop operations.

The Daily Iowan reports at last week’s formal session, the board approved plans for the Melrose Avenue shop. It’s the county’s main facility for maintaining and servicing public vehicles including patrol cars, snowplows, and other service trucks.

The project includes a two-bay expansion with an optional third bay. The project is now out for bids.  The county allocated $376,400 in its 2025 budget, with $310,000 remaining after architect fees. An additional $1.32 million is budgeted for 2026 to complete the project.

Additional expenditures were also approved, including over $45,000 in additional funds towards the Historic Poor Farm Kitchen Project, and a $20,000 contract amendment to support child abuse protection efforts for the Community Partnership for Protecting Children.
