A West Liberty man was arrested early Sunday morning after an alleged assault on two women.

The incident occurred at around 4:45am on the 900 block of Spring Ridge Drive and involved 21-year-old Bryan Martinez-Zavala of East 8th Street.  Johnson County deputies responded to reports of a domestic altercation between Martinez-Zavala and a female victim. The victim was reportedly visibly frightened of the man and requested that she speak with a deputy in a squad car.  She then alleged that Martinez-Zavala repeatedly threatened her life while physically assaulting her.  There was visible redness and swelling on the left side of the woman’s face where Martinez-Zavala allegedly struck her.  She also reportedly had marks on her neck and cuts on her hands.

A second woman on scene reported that she also had her life threatened by Martinez-Zavala and that he destroyed her and the other woman’s phones when they tried to call 911 for help.

Martinez-Zavala had injuries consistent with inflicting injuries on the victim.

He was charged with one count of Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, and two each of 1st degree Harassment and Obstruction of Emergency Communications.  If convicted on all charges, Martinez-Zavala could be sentenced to up to over six years in prison.

A no-contact order was requested between Martinez-Zavala and the alleged victims.
