An Iowa City man was arrested Wednesday after an investigation determined he sexually assaulted a child while he was underage.

According to court records, 19-year-old Carlos Lara of the Bon Aire Mobile Home Lodge on Highway 6 East was between the ages of 13 and 15 when he allegedly sexually assaulted the girl on multiple occasions between January 1st 2019 and December 31st 2020. The child was 8 years old when the reported assaults began.

Lara allegedly admitted to authorities that his relationship with the victim was inappropriate and provided several statements that corroborated the girl’s narrative.

Lara was taken into custody Wednesday night and charged with 2nd degree Sexual Abuse. He faces a prison term of up to 25 years if convicted.

A no-contact order was requested between Lara and the alleged victim.

Lara was charged with Extortion and 1st Degree Harassment last month after he allegedly used sexually explicit photos of a minor to get the girl to have sex with him. He’s also accused of sending the photos to others and the girl’s mother. If convicted on those charges, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
