A Bloomington Illinois man has been charged with domestic assault after an incident at an Iowa City residence early last year.
The incident occurred on the 2200 block of Miami Drive on February 18th 2024. 40-year-old Deanthony McCan and his girlfriend attended a party there that led to the couple arguing over their relationship. They left in their vehicle, where McCan allegedly began punching the woman in the face numerous times. After returning to their residence in Bloomington, the woman reported the incident to the Bloomington Police Department.
Officers there met with the couple the morning of February 19th. The victim reportedly had visible injuries, including a large hematoma on her forehead. Both confirmed they were in Iowa City earlier, but McCan denied the assault.
Iowa City Police investigated the incident and found witnesses who saw McCan and the victim together at the Miami Drive residence.
McCan has a previous conviction for Domestic Abuse Assault from Cook County Illinois in 2015 and has a pending charge of Domestic Abuse Assault out of Bloomington. The couple have been in an intimate relationship for approximately four years and cohabitate together.
A warrant was issued February 26th, 2024 and McCan remained at large until he was served on April 27th of this year. He faces a 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault charge and could be sentenced to up to two years in jail if convicted.
Court records indicate Judge Brandon Schrock issued a no-contact order April 28th that McCan violated on April 30th. A second no contact order was issued Thursday on May 1st and a hearing on McCan’s request to lift the order is scheduled for this Thursday.
