An Iowa City man was arrested after an investigation determined he wrote a series of bad checks to a local grocery store.

Police say 56-year-old Jeffrey Chapman of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street wrote out five non-sufficient fund checks to HyVee on North Dodge Street totaling over $640 between February 19th and 21st.  The store sent a letter to Chapman on March 12th demanding payment, but there was no response.

A warrant was issued on April 7th;  Chapman was served on April 25th and charged with 4th degree Theft. He could spend up to a year in jail if convicted.

Chapman was released on his own recognizance pending future court dates on April 26th.
