An Iowa City man wanted on forgery and theft charges was taken into custody Thursday night after officers reportedly found him in a parking lot with marijuana.
20-year-old Daquan Thomas of Crosspark Avenue is accused of stealing a check made out to First National Bank of Omaha for nearly $3100 from the victim’s mailbox before it was picked up by the mail carrier on August 27th. Witnesses said his vehicle had unique tinted taillights and matched the description of a vehicle stopped by Iowa City Police about a month before.
Police alleged Thomas altered the check so it was made payable to him, and he put the check in his MidWestOne Bank account using mobile deposit. After the check posted, he withdrew the funds.
Then on March 9th, Thomas allegedly took $300 in cash from an electronic safe at the Casey’s on Broadway Street.
Warrants were issued for both incidents.
At around 7:45pm Thursday, Thomas was in the parking lot of Up In Smoke on Broadway Street , reportedly sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that smelled strongly of marijuana. The officer told Thomas to hand over the marijuana and was placed under arrest.
Thomas faces one count each of Forgery, 2nd degree Theft, 5th degree Theft, and Marijuana Possession. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to over 11 years in prison.
