A transient accused of cutting a University of Iowa Health Care security guard with a knife is back in custody after skipping a court date.
43-year-old Andres Diaz had an arraignment set for April 21st. He failed to appear, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Online records show he has since been taken back into custody.
UI Police say last February Diaz was drinking vodka inside the UIHC Hawkins Drive location when he pulled a knife from his pants and threatened to stab another patient. A hospital security guard tried to disarm Diaz, and was cut in the process.
Diaz was charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.
A new arraignment date has not yet been set.
